Lothian's CRDC

The Commercial Research Delivery Centre (CRDC) in Edinburgh, based at the Western General Hospital, is a key part of a UK-wide network of research hubs to accelerate the delivery of commercial clinical trials. Embedded within NHS Lothian’s clinical research infrastructure, the CRDC brings together expert teams, facilities and partners to support the efficient set-up and delivery of industry-sponsored studies, from early feasibility through to recruitment and implementation. Acting as a regional hub for innovative research, it increases capacity for high-quality trials, improves patients' access to cutting-edge treatments, and strengthens collaboration among the NHS, academia, and the life sciences industry.

What is VPAG?

The Voluntary Scheme for Branded Medicines Pricing, Access and Growth (VPAG) is a UK-wide, five-year initiative designed to expand the country’s capacity to deliver commercial clinical trials.

  • A partnership between the UK Government and the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI)
  • Supports the creation of 21 new Commercial Research Delivery Centres (CRDCs) across the UK

Upcoming enhancements in Lothian

VPAG funding will support several key infrastructure upgrades:

  • New aseptic pharmacy unit at WGH
  • Advanced ophthalmology equipment and staffing
  • Focus on Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products (ATMPs)
